CELMI srl (Italy) - Press Release: The Celmi srl Team participated in the work group of the CANopen foundation for the definition of the related protocol for onboard weighing devices. The standardized interface allows easy integration into CANopen-based body builder networks. These systems are typically installed on commercial trucks (e.g. refuse collection vehicles), mobile construction machinery (e.g. excavators), agricultural and forestry vehicles and special off-road vehicles (e.g. for airports). Typical applications include bulk transportation, waste management, quarrying and logging.

The CiA 459 profile specification consists of three parts. Part 1 contains the general description and provides a functional overview. Part 2 specifies the communication parameters and Part 3 standardizes the application parameters. An on-board weighing device conforming to this specification collects sensor values from the load cells, pre-processes them and supplies the monitored weighing data to the CANopen interface for further evaluation, recording and for overload protection systems. Such a device can monitor the load, can measure the weight of the axles and can handle the weight values.

A specific example of application of this standard is the double-shear load cell, type DSB, designed and built by Celmi srl for the dynamic weighing of waste on trucks. It is a product entirely made of stainless steel, welded to microplasma, which our technicians are able to study according to the specific needs of the customer: both with 4-20 mA output and CANopen CiA 301.
