Molg (USA) - Molg, a company specializing in robotics and circular manufacturing, has been awarded a $5 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The funding, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will be used to develop robotic systems that autonomously disassemble laptops, recovering batteries 50% faster and at half the cost of current processes.
This innovative project, focused on solutions for the circular economy, includes the creation of a Design for Disassembly (DfD) Toolchain. This technology will enable laptops to be designed from the outset for easier disassembly, facilitating reuse and recycling.
Molg plans to deploy five robotic “Microfactories” to dismantle laptops in collaboration with electronics disposition partners such as Sims Lifecycle Services. The initiative also includes partnerships with electronics brands like HP, which will leverage Molg’s technology to create more sustainable designs aligned with circular economy goals.
Additionally, the project promotes the development of a skilled workforce by providing training for robotics technicians and sustainable product designers. This effort aims to make recycling more efficient, create safe and well-paid jobs, and reduce global electronic waste, which is currently recycled at a rate of just 22.3%.
With this integrated approach, Molg aims to transform the circular economy in electronics, creating sustainable models that benefit both industry and the environment.
