Berlin Airport Chooses ALE Network Infrastructure Solutions

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise (Germany) - Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, a leading provider of secure networking and communication solutions, has been selected to renew the critical multi-service network infrastructure at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). This important decision reinforces the trust-based partnership between the European company and the airport operator, who will receive 1,000 switches by the end of 2025, meeting the high security requirements needed for the future.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the third largest in Germany, after Frankfurt and Munich, and one of the most modern in Europe, required state-of-the-art technological infrastructure. After a public tender, ALE was chosen to upgrade the equipment installed prior to the airport’s opening, based on the best cost-benefit ratio, sustainability, longevity, and advanced security features of the devices.

According to Erik Brych, Head of IT Systems at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, “Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise was the most competitive supplier over the entire eight-year period, offering a solution that does not incur additional costs for using the technology, significantly reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO). Furthermore, we value the durability of the equipment and its reduced environmental impact, as well as the excellent support from this European manufacturer.”

The infrastructure provided by Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise includes OmniSwitch® 6860N switches, designed for demanding converged networks. These compact, high-density switches offer high performance, reliability, and security features such as point-to-point encryption and application detection, as well as being interoperable with existing systems and prepared for future network technologies.

The delivery of the equipment has already begun, with installation and commissioning scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025. This infrastructure will serve as a blueprint for future networks, ensuring enhanced security for the airport.

Nicolai Blonner, Head of Critical Infrastructures at Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, stated: “It is a great satisfaction for us that our technology perfectly meets the needs of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. These are requirements shared by many companies, especially due to the NIS2 regulation. The use of non-subscription-based technology represents a competitive advantage that we are happy to offer to other companies.”

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise is a global provider of secure networking and communication solutions, with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and corporate governance. With over 100 years of innovation, the company serves more than a million customers worldwide.
